Ache

She burned. Laying there exhausted from the fever, she tossed in the bed for the thousandth time trying to find a cool part to lie in and a position that didn't hurt.

How come the human race had come so far and yet there still wasn't a cure for something as simple but nasty as the flu.

Her scientific mind told her to be grateful for the symptoms she was experiencing because they were an indication of her immune system actually working, fighting the virus. The blocked up nose, fever, headache, sore throat and the overall aches were a good thing. Okay so positive thinking wasn't working, she still felt like crap and was angry about her inability to cope with something that was a part of life.

Rolling over again a pile of tissues dropped from the quilt onto the floor. She sighed as she thought of the mess her bedroom was now in. Six days of this and he was impressed with the body's ability to produce liquids at such an amazing rate. Several boxes of tissues and toilet rolls later and her nose had now gone from the runny to blocked state. She wasn't sure which was worse, now she was free from the annoying need to have tissue in hand all the time, but she was left without the ability to breathe easily.

All she wanted was to sleep but it seemed an impossibility. As soon as she dropped off she awoke with a fit of coughing or from dreams of suffocation. Groaning from the frustration she sat herself up and clicked the remote for the t.v. Flipping though the channels rapidly she settled for the first thing that grabbed her attention.

She leant back against the headboard tried to let herself be distracted and not think of all the things that she longed to be able to do. She had tried sitting at her computer and having at least some contact with the outside world but even that left her drained within minutes.

Propped there against the headboard and lulled by the background noise of the t.v. she finally succumbed to some much needed sleep.

When she awoke again it was now dark and her thirst was almost painful.

"Here" a gentle voice said and a glass of water was pressed into her hand. Gratefully she drank the cool water before handing the glass back to her lover.

"When did you get in?" she asked trying to adjust to the darkness and see him. She could feel the bed shift under his weight as he slid in beside her. There was a click and the bedroom light next to the bed gently lit the room.

"Only a moment ago. I'm sorry that I woke you but I knew that you needed the water."

"It's okay" and it was. She felt relived for the first time that day. His cool body pressed into hers and she felt the heat that had invaded her for the past few days subside just a little. It was not much, but the relief was huge. His hands gently rubbed her back as he pulled her too him, his kisses feather light on her forehead.

She had missed him so much while he had been away and now he was here. Groaning again she realised how she must look, tired and no make up. Red eyes and blotchy face and worse - a nose that Rudolph would be proud of. And yet as she looked into his blue eyes she knew that he didn't see these things. He had this amazing ability to look beyond all that and see the person inside.

Mistaking her groan for one of pain he shifted his position so that she was now slightly on top of him. He lowered his hands and started rubbing her lower back in a way that he hoped would distract her.

"I'm here now and I'm not going anywhere until you are better. Anything you want is yours." His eyes twinkled and despite her raging headache she laughed.

"Hmmm I see. Now you decide to be my slave when I'm in no fit state to take advantage of this fully!"

Daniel's smile was wide as he responded with a light kiss to her lips. "I could give you an IOU for you to call in at any time."

She laughed lightly and pulled held onto him more tightly. A feeling started to burn its way inside of her as she realised the possibilities and despite how awful she felt she now had something to look forward to. And in the meantime she could feel some of the ache that she had been experiencing subside as he gently took care of her as only he could.
